The History
- Since 1977, the United States has invested billions of dollars to clean up waterways to meet the Clean Water Act’s main goal to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters.”
- Congress made dumping waste into streams and other bodies of water illegal. So what happened? Why are so many communities in West Virginia being plagued by toxic water?
- In 2002 the Bush administration redefined “fill material” in the CleanWater Act to include mining waste. Now waste can be used to fill streams across the country.
- Coal companies are able to dump millions of tons of mine waste into our streams affecting our once healthy water.
- Already 1200 miles of Appalachian streams have already been destroyed.
